Thinking about transitioning to a toddler bed?

One transition I encourage parents NOT to rush? Moving from the crib to a toddler or floor bed!

If your child is happy, comfortable, and safely sleeping in their crib, there is usually no reason to move them simply because they’ve reached a certain age.

A crib provides clear physical boundaries around sleep. Once we move to a toddler or floor bed, your child suddenly has a whole lot more freedom. They can get out of bed, wander around the room, come looking for you, play with toys, or test those new boundaries at bedtime and throughout the night.

Developmentally, younger toddlers also don’t always have the impulse control to understand, “I can get out of this bed, but I’m supposed to stay here and sleep.”

That’s why I typically encourage families to keep the crib for as long as it remains safe and appropriate. There is no prize for transitioning early!

When the time DOES come, having a plan for boundaries and expectations can make the transition so much smoother.

Sometimes protecting good sleep means not changing what’s already working.

So how do you know when it IS time to make the transition?

Some signs include:

• Your child is consistently trying to climb out of the crib or has successfully climbed out, creating a safety concern.

• They’ve reached the height or developmental limits specified by their crib manufacturer.

• They are developmentally ready to understand and follow simple bedtime boundaries.

• They’re showing genuine readiness and interest in moving to a “big kid” bed.

• There is another safety or practical reason that makes the crib no longer appropriate.

If none of those things are happening and your child is sleeping beautifully in their crib, you don’t need to fix what isn’t broken!

The longer we can safely keep those physical crib boundaries in place, the more time your child has to develop the maturity and impulse control that can make the eventual transition SO much easier.
